Beacons

Beacons are represented by the on the action panel. You can use the ATMS to:

  • View the list of flashers
  • Enable or Disable flashers
  • Locate beacon flashers on the map
  • Control state of the flashers

The ATMS allows for automatic and manual control of Beacons/Discrete State Signs (DSS). Beacons are typically used to indicate messages to traveler in relation to a static road sign.

You can show or hide beacons on the map by clicking the Beacons icon in the Action Panel menu.

The state of the signs can be controlled manually, or through event response. A beacon may have different requested states in its queue based on source: the sign displays the state with the highest priority.

Turn the Beacon Layer On or Off

To turn the flashers layer on or off, click the on the action panel. When the Beacon layer is displayed, the flashers are highlighted.

Icons

The flashers indicate the status of each beacon. The icons you will see are as follows:

ICONDESCRIPTION
A grey dot indicates the sign is OFF, but online / enabled.
A white dot indicates the sign is ON.
A grey sign face means that the sign has been disabled by a user.

View Current Message on Beacon

Hover on the map icon for a flasher to open a window showing the title of the beacon it is displaying. The window is tethered to the beacon icon it belongs to.

This window updates automatically whenever the beacon's description changes.

View a Beacons List

To open a list of all flashers configured in the ATMS, right click on the Beacon icon on the action panel and select the Beacon List option.

The Beacon list indicates:

  • The status of each flashers and
  • The state of each flashers

Each row contains a set of buttons that can be used to manage the flashers.

Search a Beacon

You can search the beacons list using the Search box at the top right of the window. See section Search a List for more details.

Sort the Beacon List

You can sort the list by the icons in its header. See section Sort a List for more details.

Manage a Beacon

The beacon Properties view provides access to more detailed information about a beacon, and control features. To open the Properties view for a beacon, you can either:

  • Right click on the map icon of the desired sign and select Properties

  • Click on the button for the desired beacon in the Beacon List
  • The properties view includes a fixed portion at the top that displays the beacon's status, reported time, source and current state. It also provides options to: Enable or Disable : communication control with the beacon Release Control : if clicked, the beacon will no longer be under manual control
  • The rest of the properties view is divided into tabs: Control : Under manual control, the state of the flasher can be set to opposite its current state by the operator. The requested states of the flashers are displayed within the queue. The operator can remove requested states from the queue with the Button. Detail : The details tab contains administrative information and operational details for the sign. Comments attached to the sign are displayed here, and additional comments can be added with the button.

Enable or Disable for a Beacon

When a flasher is Disabled, the ATMS stops communicating with it.

You can Enable or Disable a flasher from either its Properties view or from its entry in the Beacon List.

To Enable or Disable a flasher from its Beacon Properties view, open the view for the desired beacon either from the map icon, or the Beacon List. Only one of the Enable or Disable buttons will be active, and the other will be grey/inactive, based on the current state of the beacon. Click on the Enable or Disable button to turn the beacon on or off in ATMS.

To Enable or Disable a sign from the Sign List, open the Sign List and find the desired sign. Click on the button to open the menu for that sign. Only one of the Enable or Disable menu options will be active and the other will be grey/inactive, based on the current state of the sign. Click on the Enable or Disable menu option to turn the sign on or off in ATMS.

Device Comment for a Beacon

To open the Comments view for a beacon, you can either:

  • Right click on the map icon of the desired sign and select Device Comment

  • Add a comment if no comment is present for the selected beacon.

  • Click on the button for the desired beacon in the Beacon List. Click on detail tab for selected beacon and add or edit comment.

  • Remove Comment

Location Details for a Beacon

Right click on the beacon icon on the map and select location Details to view the exact location of the selected beacon.
